Smartphone scare
I just gave myself the biggest scare of my technology life. Well, no. The biggest scare was when I accidently reinstalled Windows and it formatted my hard drive. I had to pay $75 for a program to restore all the deleted files.
Okay. So this is the second biggest scare. I was fiddling around with my Sidekick 3, and I had the back panel open and was reading all the warnings and precautions printed on the battery. When I removed the back panel, a message comes up on the device warning me not to remove the battery without first completely powering down the device.
Along with the warnings on the battery is a little visual on how to remove the battery. Without even thinking, I did as the picture, and my device — as one would assume — powered off. When I put the battery back, the device reset and restarted, but not without an “oh, shit” moment.
Everything was gone. My contacts, text messages, emails, ringtones, photos… everything not directly saved to the memory card was gone.
Now I’ve experienced this once before, and the stuff came back within minutes of the phone connecting to the network. But this time, those minutes went by, and still my stuff was gone.
I called up technical support, and they told me to give it about two hours. If my stuff didn’t come back within two hours, it was gone for good.
Luckily, my stuff is coming back. My emails came back first, followed by my contact list (120+ contacts gone in the blink of an eye is definitely something to stress about), and my calendar, notes, and to do list. I’m still waiting on the ringtones and the text messages.
Bet I’ll never make that mistake again.

When I read this, I thought, “Wow, this is so Arwen!” I mean, when do you not touch things you aren’t supposed to touch? Haha. But at least you’re getting your stuff back now.
Oh I have had SO many of those moments! On my current brand new hard drive I had to reinstall windows due to a bad hack then I upgraded computers and when I connected it, it fucked up my windows, but luckily the files were still there so I sub-connected it to my other computer and backed all the shit up. Then I had to wipe it clean and reinstall windows using the newer computer and the installation messed up (hung) on me three times.
So far no more problems.
Now with my site, I switched to WordPress and imported all of my entries from CuteNews using the RSS feed but since that doesn’t store comments, I am losing all my comments so I can’t delete the other blog. I tried putting some in manually and editing the time/date stamp but then it moves the comment to another old entry which is weird. But wordpress is SO much better. I have to work on it later.
(P.S Don’t bother commenting back on my site, its down!)
Haha, the perils of technology. I swear, we have all had those “oh shit” moments you write of. I’m glad your stuff is coming back – that contact info is much more valuable than the phone itself, I’m sure.
I have those days… When you get curious and do something you shouldn’t be. I usually end up breaking the object though…
Lucky for you, your stuff is returning. Btw, I’ve always wanted a sidekick. Is it as good as I think it is?
how do you accidently reinstall Windows?! *LOL*
